Who defends Siri?
How Reddit answered “Siri can’t set a 19:40 alarm”
Eight posts in eight communities, 311 comments and about 100.1K views. Every comment was pulled and labelled by stance, and every commenting account was profiled for signs of automation, to answer one question: was the “Siri works, your English is wrong” reply organic, or coordinated bot defence of Apple?

Fifty years of Apple, and Siri still can’t set an alarm for 19:40
The original blog post by Dr. Ivan S. Novikau on vania-novikau.me: an 81-second, one-take video (“apple wake the future”, YouTube) of one person asking an iPhone for a 7:40 p.m. alarm in four ways, over a motion-graphics timeline of Apple from 1976 to 2026. Every word was transcribed correctly, yet Siri never set 19:40. The eight Reddit posts analysed below grew out of it.
What was asked, and what Siri set
“Setting an alarm is about the simplest task a voice assistant has. The failure here is not recognition, since the words were transcribed correctly; it is parsing time expressions that people actually use… Each reply drops part of the request and confidently acts on the rest, which is arguably worse than asking ‘did you mean 19:40?’” (from the original post)
Key findings
49%of all replies from others defend Siri, either by blaming the poster’s English or by saying it “works for me”.
4 of 57defending accounts carry automation signals (new account, near-zero karma, empty history, LLM phrasing). The rest are long-lived human accounts: median age 6.0 years.
45comments, 2.3 per defender on average, come from just two accounts (Redditor-001, Redditor-002). The defence is loud rather than wide.
35comments agree Siri is broken and pile on with their own failures; 24 defend the poster or 24-hour-clock speakers against the critics.
12replies actually answered the “which language school?” question. The only concrete tips: a local ESL course (Redditor-001) and Babbel or a textbook (Redditor-027).
4 linkstie the strongest defender pair, Redditor-002 ↔ Redditor-121: replies posted within 90 s of each other on the same thread and mutual back-up. That is a tag-team pattern, not proof of shared ownership.
